Why your skin needs 8 hours of beauty sleep too

When it comes to your beauty routine, sleep may be the closest thing there is to a fountain of youth. People who sleep for at least 8 hours actually feel more attractive. Research shows that being well-rested makes others view you as better-looking, too.

You’ll reap these four beauty benefits from solid nights of shut-eye.

1. Fewer Wrinkles, Less Puffy Eyes

Skin makes new collagen when you sleep, which prevents sagging. “That’s part of the repair process,” says Patricia Wexler, MD, a dermatologist in New York. More collagen means skin is plumper and less likely to wrinkle. Therefore plenty of sleep makes fine lines and wrinkles less visible and gives your skin a healthy glow.

2. A Glowing Complexion

While you sleep, your body also makes new collagen, the protein that keeps skin strong and elastic. Sleep deprivation actually causes a decrease in blood flow to the skin surrounding your face.

3. Healthier, Fuller Hair

Hair loss, damage, breakage and even growth can all be affected by lack of sleep. Hair follicles (where hair growth begins) gain nutrients, vitamins, and minerals from blood flow. And when we are lack of sleep, the blood flow decreases, the hair gets less nutrients and it weakens and results in hair loss.

4. Better Health

Your skin can focus on mending itself while you sleep, since it isn’t defending itself from ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and free radicals (harmful molecules from the environment). Skin also loses more water when you sleep than it does during the day. It is best to apply a good moisturizer before bed and drink plenty of water during the day to help your complexion stay hydrated overnight.
